Smelling salts (or ammonia inhalants) are used for stimulating consciousness. It can be used to help arouse consciousness for an unconscious or semi-conscious victim or to restore mental alertness during competition.
During the 17th century the name "smelling salts" was alternatively known as the "spirit of harts-horn" because of the distillation of an ammonia solution from the shavings of hart (now known as deer) horns and hooves.
