Today is HIV Vaccine Awareness Day hiv-vaccineHIV Vaccine Awareness Day (HVAD) is observed annually on May 18th. This observance provides an opportunity to recognize and thank the many volunteers, community members, health professionals, and scientists who are working together to find a safe and effective preventive HIV vaccine. It is also a day to educate communities across the nation about the importance of preventive HIV vaccine research. According to the National Institutes for Health, they have a NIH-funded study which will test safety, efficacy of vaccine regimen through a Large-scale HIV vaccine trial to launch in South Africa. Also, they note that advances in HIV/AIDS research have given us the opportunity to transform the lives of those living with HIV while providing highly effective methods of preventing the infection. This progress has strengthened optimism for achieving a durable end to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. With an estimated two million new HIV infections occurring worldwide annually, however, controlling and ultimately ensuring a durable end to the HIV/AIDS pandemic also will likely require a safe and effective vaccine. AVAC has developed a 2016 HVAD “toolkit” (see below) of user-friendly materials to help vaccine advocates explain vaccine science in simple language. Sustained support from funders, researchers, trial participants, civil society and many other stakeholders is needed to build on important vaccine research lessons learned to date.
