Labs are full of hazardous materials. Many of these materials give off fumes, mists, vapors, particulates or aerosols which are hazardous. To minimize exposure to these materials, special precautions need to be taken. This often means within a "hood." WHAT EXACTLY IS A FUME HOOD? - A fume hood or fume cupboard is a type of local ventilation device that is designed to limit exposure to hazardous or toxic fumes, vapors or dusts. A fume hood is typically a large piece of equipment enclosing five sides of a work area, the bottom of which is most commonly located at a standing work height. These devices are used to address three primary goals: to protect user from inhaling toxic gases, to protect product and experiments and to protect the environment.
