Unitized Ammonia Inhalants

Another way to add to your unitized first aid kits are adding Ammonia inhalants (smelling salts). They are mostly used for stimulating consciousness by irritating the mucous membranes of the nose and lungs. It can be used to help arouse consciousness for an unconscious or semi-conscious victim or to restore mental alertness during competition.

Ammonia gas is toxic in large concentrations for prolonged periods and can be fatal but since smelling salts produce only a small amount of ammonia gas, no adverse health problems from their use have been reported. However, a high concentration of inhaled ammonia might burn the nasal or oral mucosa that can linger for a few days.
